The way to successfully work past a gatekeeper is:
Show respect at all times. It’s important not to attempt to trick the gatekeeper into moving your call through as it will cheapen your image to the particular person in charge. For instance acting like you know the shipping manager or that he is anticipating your call when he is not. In addition some other mistakes Brokers make include pleading for access to the shipping manager or apologizing for interrupting their morning. Just say: Shipping please or something like that.
You deliver a helpful service to your clientele. Don’t cheapen that by using some form of the following: Can I speak with Mr. X real quick, won’t take long etc. Be confident, the service you provide is viable and should be treated with respect. Don’t go on and on about your organization. Just explain to the gatekeeper that so and so manages shipping and that’s what we’ll be speaking about. If shipping is not readily available make certain you probe the gatekeeper. Acquire some useful information, for instance: Does your organization move products? Do you see trucks moving in an out throughout the day?
If the gatekeeper asks what the phone call is in reference to, inform them that you have got trucks in the area and you wished to check with the shipping manager to see if he had products on his dock that he needs to move. With cold calling many a broker cannot stand dealing with the gatekeeper. Interacting with gatekeepers comes with the territory. The sooner you learn to deal with gatekeepers, the sooner you'll begin to get passed through to the people in charge. Another helpful tip with talking to gatekeepers is to get them to assist you. People really like to help so if you get the gatekeeper's name simply say something along the lines of: Gloria, I'm hoping you can assist me, I'm wanting to reach the individual in charge of shipping mainly because I have got trucks in the vicinity and wanted to find out if they had some freight they need to have moved. A little something so basic as the preceeding statement can open up the gate.
